Yesterday I said a podcast invite is the warmest cold open in business. Today, who you invite. Not "50 industry leaders you admire." That's somebody else's bookmark list. The Dream 50 is 50 specific people who, if you got an hour with them in the next twelve months, would meaningfully change the trajectory of your business in the next two years. Three buckets, roughly even. People who already buy what you sell — from someone else. They lend you instant credibility every time they share the episode. They also tell their friends what surprised them. People your buyers already trust. Investors. Operators. Authors your buyers cite. You're not pitching them anything. You're getting yourself introduced into their world by being someone they enjoyed talking to. Lateral peers running adjacent businesses to yours. The deals don't usually come from them directly. They come from their referrals, six months later, when one of their clients says "we need help with X" and they remember the conversation you had on their drive home. The hardest part of building this list isn't naming people. It's resisting the urge to include people whose names look good on a guest roster but who don't actually move your number. Review the list the first week of every quarter. A frozen list rots fast — people change roles, your offer evolves, your pipeline reshapes. Tomorrow: how you ask them. Before I talk pricing or process with a new client, I walk them through a piece of math first. Prepping questions. Recording. Re-records when the audio glitches. Reviewing the edit. Chasing a guest to confirm. Writing show notes. Posting the clips. Most weeks, that's 8 hours. If your time is worth $200 an hour, that's $1,600 a week you paid yourself to skip billable work. $6,000 or more a month, quietly, unbilled. Nobody puts that number in a budget. It just disappears into "stuff I have to...
After this week's setup, the recommendation is simple. The host I put every FullCast client podcast on is Captivate. Why specifically Captivate and not Transistor, Buzzsprout, or Libsyn? Because of the four-thing filter from Wednesday. Real RSS ownership. IAB-certified analytics. Dynamic content insertion that actually works across the back catalog. And a support team that responds inside hours rather than days. Captivate isn't the cheapest. It starts at nineteen dollars a month. It's not the...
Quick check-in on why we're spending a whole week on hosting. It's not because hosting is the most important thing about a podcast. Not even close. The guest you invite is more important. The hour you spend in front of the mic is more important. The relationship that comes out of the conversation is more important. The episode-to-quarter content system is more important. But hosting is the load-bearing thing under all of that. Pick the wrong host and the show gets fragile in ways that don't...
